Glorious Amaltash

 

Delhi summer is not something that one looks forward to. Who would like temperatures in the 40s, blazing sun,  dust storms, hot dry winds. Come July/August and there is suffocating humidity. summers in Delhi would have been unbearable but for bright yellow Amaltash. If there is one thing which soothes my mind in summers, it is the sight of Amaltash. In scorching heat where everything seems to be drying up and burning, this tree is ready with its dangling yellow lobes which instantly catch your attention. Bright yellow flowers of this tree create a lovely contrasting combination with its green leaves. This beautiful sight starts with sporadic yellow lobes and before we realize, there is hardly any green left on the tree. When you are out for a morning walk or returning from a tiring day at work, Amaltash grips your mind with the yellow carpet of flowers on the ground, bunches of flowers swaying with the wind. Those yellow flowers leaving the tree and embracing earth are indeed an epitome of life cycle. 

Amaltash trees are seen in abundance in New Delhi. Most striking sight is at Amrita Shergil Marg. This road looks picture perfect with Amaltash in full bloom on both sides of the road. The road is as beautiful and colourful as paintings of Amrita Shergil. All residential colonies in New Delhi proudly carry Amaltash. When one is driving on Subramania Bharti Marg or in India Gate circle during summers, a canopy of yellow danglings and carpet of yellow flowers makes the drive . Whether you are walking or driving, you keep getting glimpses of the yellow blossom of this Indian Laburnum. One look at this blossom and we know what nature showers upon us. Whether we care for those trees or not, whether we observe their beauty or not, they blossom as if they are leading by example. They are showing humans to blossom and be happy irrespective of surroundings. These trees  are equally beautiful at night. Street lights add golden shade to the flowers and they indeed look like little golden chandeliers swaying to the tunes of a breeze. But for these Amaltash, summer would have indeed been unbearable. 

राजधानीतली हिरवाई

इतर कुठच्याही महानगरापेक्षा नवी दिल्लीत झाडांची संख्या जास्त आहे. इंडिया गेट, राष्ट्रपती भवन, संसद भवन, पुराना किला , सुंदर नर्सरी,लोदी गार्डन्स,नेहेरु पार्क,हुमायून टोम्ब , सफदरजंग टोम्ब ह्या सगळ्या ठिकाणी असणारी जुनी आणि विविध प्रकारची झाडं म्हणजे नवी दिल्लीतला हिरवा खजिनाच म्हणायला हवा. झाडांचे बरेच प्रकार इथे असल्याने वेगेवेगळ्या ऋतूतली झाडांची बदलती रूपं बघण्याचा आनंद इथे मिळतो. नवी दिल्लीची  राजधानी म्हणून आखणी केली ल ल्युटेन्स नावाच्या आर्किटेक्त्त ने, त्यामुळे ह्या परिसराला ल्युटेन्स दिल्ली असंही म्हटलं जात. राजधानीची उभारणी होत असतानाच इथल्या महत्वाच्या रस्त्यांच्या दुतर्फा झाड लावली गेली, ह्यांना ऍव्हेन्यू ट्रीज असंही म्हणतात. एकदा उन्हाळ्यात अशोक रोडवरून जाताना रस्त्याच्या दुतर्फा जांभळं विकणारे लोक दिसले. नंतर लक्षात आलं कि ह्या रस्त्याच्या दोन्ही बाजूला जांभळाची बरीच झाडं आहेत.  इंडिया गेट मधून हे दहा रस्ते फुटतात त्या प्रत्येक रस्त्यावर विशिष्ट प्रकारची झाडं लावलेली आहेत. अशोक रोडवर जशी जांभळाची झाडं आहेत तशी शाहजहान रस्त्यावर अर्जुन वृक्ष आहेत, पंडारा रोडवर प्रामुख्याने नीम आहे. भर उन्हाळ्यात ह्या रस्त्यावर नीम वृक्षाची पानं गळताना बघायला मजा येते. इंडिया गेट परिसरातही वेगवेगळी झाडं आहेत. पूर्वीचा राजपथ आता कर्तव्य पथ . ह्या कर्तव्य पथाच्या दोन्ही बाजूला जांभळाची बरीच झाडं आहेत. इंडिया गेट च्या सर्कल मध्ये पिंपळ,आंबा,अर्जुन,नीम , गुलमोहोर हि झाड हमखास दिसतात. इथे काही मोठे आणि चांगले जुने वटवृक्षही आहेत. ह्या वटवृक्षानी इंडिया गेट च्या राजस सौंदर्यात भरच पडते. जणू काही हे वृक्ष दिल्लीत घडलेल्या वर्षानुवर्षांच्या इतिहासाचे साक्षीदार. असं म्हणतात कि लोदी रोड वरची काही झाडं हि शेरशहा सुरीच्या काळात लावली गेली होती. खरं खोटं मला माहित नाही पण लोदी रोड वर अनेक जुनी झाडं आहेत . जवळच्या लोदी गार्डनमध्येही खूप वेगवेगळी झाडं पाहायला मिळतात. 

नवी दिल्लीतला माझा सर्वात आवडता रस्ता म्हणजे अमृता शेरगील मार्ग. खान मार्केटमधून निघणारा आणि लोदी रोडवर पोचणारा अमृता शेरगील मार्ग. अमृता शेरगील ह्या कलाकार बाईंचं नाव सार्थ करणारा हा चित्रवत सुंदर रस्ता . अमृता शेरगील चित्रकार होत्या. २०  शतकातल्या महत्वाच्या स्त्री चित्रकार. ह्या रस्त्याच्या दुतर्फा मोठी आणि श्रीमंत मंडळींची घरं आहेत. ह्या घरांची सुंदर लॉन्स किंवा बागेतली झाडं बाहेरच्या रस्त्याकडे उत्सुकतेने पाहत असतात. ह्या रस्त्याच्या दुतर्फा बहाव्याची झाडं आहेत. हिंदीत बहाव्याला अमलताश असं भारदस्त नाव आहे. भर उन्हाळ्यात अमलताश बहरलेला असतो. त्याच्या पिवळ्या जर्द फुलांचा सडा  अमृता शेरगील मार्गावर पडलेला असतो. दिल्लीतलं तापमान ४० च्या पुढे गेलेलं असतं , उन्हाळ्याने जीव नकोसा झालेला असतो अशावेळी ह्या बहाव्याच्या सुखद दर्शनाने मन शांत  व्हायला वेळ लागत नाही. 

अमृता शेरगील मार्गाव्यतिरिक्त दिल्लीत अनेक ठिकाणी अमलताश दिसतो. त्याच्या फुलांचा सोनेरी सडा अनेक ठिकाणी पडलेला दिसतो. ह्या बहाव्याच्या फुलांचे लोलक जागोजागी डुलताना दिसतात. दिल्ली हायकोर्टाच्या जवळ असणाऱ्या सुब्रमणिया भारती मार्गावर,पुढे अकबर रोडवर बरेच अमलताश आहेत, अगदी सप्टेंबर पर्यंत पिवळ्या जर्द फुलांचे लोलक डुलताना दिसतात. एखादी वाऱ्याची झुळूक आली कि त्या  मनमोहक हालचाल होते त्याने उन्हाळ्यामुळे झालेली तगमग सुद्धा विसरायला होईल. 

दिल्लीतली थंडी ओसरायला लागते आणि वसंत ऋतूची चाहूल लागते तेव्हा अनेक ठिकाणी काटेसावर बहरायला लागते. झाडावर एखाद दोन लाल किंवा पिवळी फुलं एखाद्या दिवशी दिसतात आणि मग अचानक सगळं झाड निष्पर्ण झालेलं असतं आणि फांदीफांदीवर फुलं फुललेली दिसतात. ह्याही फुलांचे हळदी कुंकू वाटावं असे लाल पिवळे सडे पडलेले असतात. इंडिया गेट मधल्याअकबर रोड वर वाणिज्य भवन हि इमारत आहे. ह्या वाणिज्य भवनाच्या परिसरात दोन लालभडक काटेसावर आहेत. अकबर रोड आणि मौलाना आझाद रोड च्या जंक्शन वरही एक लाल काटेसावर आहे. वाणिज्य भवनाच्या भोवती चक्कर मारली तर ह्या सगळ्या काटेसावर उठून दिसतात. काटेसावर ला हिंदीत सेमल म्हणतात. संपूर्ण झाडावर एकही पान नाही, फांद्यांचे तपकिरी स्ट्रोक्स आणि त्या स्ट्रोक्सना फुटलेली सुरेख फुलं . चित्रच जणू. उन्हाळ्यात बहाव्या बरोबर फुलणारा गुलमोहोर. लाल,पिवळा गुलमोहोर पण जागोजागी फुललेला असतो. उन्हाळ्याच्या तापलेल्या वातावरणात गुलमोहोर हि जणू तापलेला असतो. दिल्लीत गुलमोहोर पार्क नावाचा परिसर आहे आणि तिथे खरोखरच गुलमोहोराची बरीच झाडं आहेत. उन्हाळ्यात फुलणारं आणखी एक झाड म्हणजे जॅकरांदा. ह्याला हिंदीत निली गुलमोहोर म्हणतात. ह्याची निळसर फुलं लक्ष वेधून घेतात. निळ्या फुलांचं प्रामाण इतर रंगाच्या फुलांपेक्षा कमीच त्यामुळेही हि फुलं लक्ष वेधून घेतात. झाकीर हुसेन मार्गावरच्या घरांपैकी एका घराच्या आवारात हा जॅकरांदा मी पाहिलेला आहे. 

दिल्लीतल्या झाडांबद्दल प्रदीप किशन ह्यांचं, ट्रीज ऑफ दिल्ली ह्या नावाचं सविस्तर पुस्तक आहे. ह्या पुस्तकामुळे दिल्लेतल्या झाडांबद्दल मला बरीच माहिती मिळाली. दिल्लीच्या भौगोलिक स्थानाचा आणि इथल्या झाडांच्या प्रकारांचा जवळचा संबंध आहे. दिल्लीच्या पश्चिमेला वाळवंटी प्रदेश येतो आणि पूर्वेला कोरडी आणि पानगळ होणारी झाडं (Dry and Deciduous forest ) पूर्व आणि पश्चिमेच्या झाडांच्या मधली  thorny forest इथे आहेत. त्यामुळेच बाभूळ,खैर हि झाडं पण इथे मोठ्या प्रमाणावर दिसतात. दिल्लीतल्या झाडांच्या प्रकाराला monsoon forest असाही म्हणतात. ह्या नावाचं मला आश्चर्यच वाटलं. ह्या प्रकारात असलेल्या झाडांची कोरड्या हवेत पानगळ सुरु होते. पावसाळा संपल्यावर साधारण तीन चार महिन्यांनी हि पानगळ सुरु होते. दिल्लीत साधारण फेब्रुवारी मार्च ह्या महिन्यांमध्ये मोठ्या प्रमाणावर पानगळ होते. ह्या झाडांच्या पानांना साधारण मार्च एप्रिल महिन्यात सुंदर लालसर छटा येते. अशी लालसर पानं असलेली बरीच झाडं मार्च एप्रिल महिन्यात दिसतात. सर्वात उठून दिसतो तो पिंपळ. दिल्लीच्या कडाक्याच्या थंडीत गोठून जातात बहुतेक हि झाड आणि पानं . जेव्हा हवेत उबदारपणा यायला लागतो तेव्हा ती आपले रंग दाखवायला लागतात आणि येणाऱ्या उन्हाळ्यासाठी तयार व्हायला लागतात. 

मी काही झाडं ,फुलं ह्यांची जाणकार नाही. पण रोज ऑफिसला जाताना, सकाळी चालताना, हिवाळ्यात सुंदर नर्सरी किंवा लोधी गार्डन इथे सहलीला गेल्यावर आजूबाजूची वेगवेगळी झाड दिसतात. त्यांचं निरीक्षण करून काही गोष्टी समजतात. काही गप्पांमधून समजतात. काही वाचनातून समजतात.  ह्या झाडांमध्ये होणारे बदल टिपणं हा माझ्या आनंदाचा एक भाग आहे. निसर्गातली व्युत्पत्ती आणि लय हे ह्या झाडांच्या निमित्ताने पाहायला मिळतं . रसरसून फुलणारी फुलं पाहिल्यावर जगण्यातले विविध रंग आठवतात. आज फुललेलं फुल उद्या जमिनीवर पडलेलं पाहिल्यावर आयुष्याची नश्वरता जाणवते. पण जेवढा वेळ ते फुल फुललेलं असतं तेवढा वेळ ते सगळ्यांना आनंद देत असतं हि पण शिकण्यासारखीच गोष्ट. महानगरात राहूनही असा हिरवागार आनंद रोज मिळण्यासारखं भाग्य नाही हेही तितकच खरं . 

Delhi Rains

 It is a Saturday morning in Mid March, it is neither winter nor summer in Delhi.  I wake up with sounds of rustling of leaves and rain drops. . Being March it is not even monsoon time in Indian continent. And light rain continues almost for the whole day, leaving me surprised.  My next few years in Delhi, I realized that this place gets intermittent rains throughout the year.  For a person like me who is essentially from Mumbai, rains are associated with Monsoon.  Since the last few years, climate changes are  causing untimely rains occasionally. Still rain means monsoon. 

Interestingly, during monsoon, the amount of rain that we get to experience in Delhi is much less. But throughout the year there are episodes of light showers. I relocated from Mumbai to Delhi in summer. Scorching dry heat of Delhi summer was a challenge to reckon with. And  one day which was unusually hot and dry, suddenly in the evening, winds laden with dust started blowing, sky got grey and soothing rain drops made their way to cracked soil. Fragrance of the soil and the unexpected drop in temperature had soothing magic on my mind and body. 

Delhi has a long summer. Almost 6 months of the year, the weather remains hot. Initially it is hot and dry and later it is hot and humid. Hot and dry part of the summer gets episodic rain. Delhi, being part of great North Indian planes, dust blows with winds. In summers, even tree leaves seem soaked in dust. Light showers do wonders to trees. Few drops of rain and leaves seem to get a fresh green coat. When the temperature feels impossibly high, these showers bring hope. When heat is weighing you down, these little rain drops give a signal of freshness, signal of green future. These showers apparently bring flavour to mangoes here. I have a fortune of having a local mango tree within premise of house allocated to me by the Government. In the first year of mango season in Delhi, I was surprised to know that mangoes in North India arrive much later than mangoes in Western India. One summer evening when there were rains, I heard my help saying, ab aam me swaad aayega. 

When Indian sub continent especially southern India and parts of western India are lashed with rains, Delhi is still expecting arrival of monsoon. But it arrives with great fanfare here. Lightening, thunders and rain. One doesn't really get long spells of rains here.  But even light showers are good enough for water logging, traffic chaos, power failure and comments, kitni barish ho rahi hai. 

Winter rains is an interesting phenomena in Delhi. Some of us may remember  Republic Day celebrations in 2015, when erstwhile President of USA, Mr. Barack Obama was a guest for Republic Day Parade. Winter rains welcomed President Obama in Delhi for Republic Day Parade. Newspapers and media were full of photos of Mr. Obama and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chatting and seemingly enjoying rain showers.  Western disturbances get Winter Rains adding freezing quotient to already frozen Delhi. In 2023, winter rains drenched guests and participants of Beating The Retreat Ceremony at Vijay Chowk. This ceremony marks the conclusion of Republic Day Celebrations in Delhi. 

Rain spells through out the year, indeed keep one's mind and soul fresh. It is like cleaning dust once in a while and getting green, fresh and rejuvenated.
